Sylvia Browne on Exploring Psychic Powers Live!

Sylvia Browne and James Randi give very different accounts of a show. Who is right?

Sylvia Brown(e) in 1989 TV Special

Sylvia Brown(e) in 1989 TV Special "Exploring Psychic Powers Live!"

Background

On June 7 1989, a TV special titled Exploring Psychic Powers Live! was shown on American television. Hosted by actor Bill Bixby, the show contained live tests of people with claimed paranormal abilities, all vying for a $100,000 prize if they passed their test. Part of that prize money was the then-$10,000 prize that James Randi was offering to anyone who could prove paranormal abilities under agreed-to conditions. The other $90,000 was provided by the show's producers.

Appearing on the show to give a demonstration of psychic powers (but not competing for the prize) was a then-little-known Sylvia Brown (she had yet to add the "e" to her last name).

In more recent years, Browne and Randi have told very different versions of what happened during Browne's segment of that show.

This article will examine both of their versions of events, and then analyze the actual video of Brown(e)'s performance that night.

Sylvia Browne's Version

On the March 06 2001 broadcast of CNN's Larry King Live titled "Are Psychics Real" (CNN transcript here), Sylvia Browne appeared with psychic James Van Praagh against a panel of skeptics, including Leon Jaroff, whose article "Talking to the Dead" (critical mostly of John Edward) had recently appeared in Time Magazine.

At one point in the show, Jaroff asked Browne about that 1989 show:

(Leon) Jaroff: All right. On the Bill Bixby show about 10 years ago, Sylvia was supposed to do readings on group. But the stipulation was that the group could only answer "yes" or "no" to her questions. And she flunked miserably.

(Sylvia) Browne: And they were all German, and they couldn't understand one word I said. And that was a setup, as you well know.

Jaroff: No, it wasn't a setup.

Browne: Oh, it was. Ron Lyon even said so later.

Jaroff: The people were only allowed to answer "yes" or "no"...

[crosstalk]

Browne: And I couldn't even talk to Randi because he kept running away from me.

[crosstalk]

Jaroff: Therefore you could elicit no information from them, for that reason.

Browne: Because they couldn't speak English. I found that afterwards They were all Germanic. That was the funniest part.

So, according to Browne, she was set up to fail, with the entire audience filled with Germans who could not speak English.

James Randi's Version

In his March 5 2004 Commentary (available here), James Randi (noted investigator of psychic and other paranormal claims) describes Browne's appearance on that show quite differently.

Within a section of the commentary titled "Sylvia Browne is a Liar" (Randi is not known for pulling his punches), Randi talks about Browne's statements on Larry King Live, and gives a very different account of events:

Months ago, Browne described her second encounter with me in 1989 where she demonstrated her abilities by reading an audience assembled for the taping of a TV special. She failed miserably, and some day I'll publish here the full text of that abysmal performance. Later, at the beginning of March, 2001, she offered on the Larry King show this excuse for that failure:

"They [the studio audience] were all Germans! And they couldn't understand a word I said! That was a setup, as you well know.... because they couldn't speak English. I found that out after, they were all Germanic!"

No, Browne, that was another blatant lie, as you well know. It's what you have been offering your fans as an alibi, but it's just another of your lies. Only one member of that audience of 140 persons was German, though he spoke English, and you spent a full one minute and seven seconds rattling off wrong guesses for him, then found out he was German, only after he told you that — in English! Didn't you know that already, Sylvia? You conversed with the other four audience members you "read" there, in fluent English, didn't you? And yet you told Larry King that they were "all Germans"! Sylvia Browne, you're a liar.

According to Randi, all the people Browne spoke to in that audience spoke fluent English except for one German gentleman who did speak English.

What Really Happened

Fortunately, the actual video of Browne's appearance on that show has recently been made available (YouTube version available here), allowing us to see just what happened that evening.

Here is a complete transcript of the video, interspersed with my remarks about Browne's performance.

Introduction
Bill Bixby introducing Brown

Bill Bixby introducing Brown

Bill Bixby: Psychic readings are an extremely subjective things. Now, some say they're entertainment - some say they're a scam, and some believe that they work. Although psychic readings are difficult to test, no program about psychic powers would be complete without a demonstration of what psychics do. Now the woman you are about to meet is well-known for her dynamic, down-to-earth style. She's a consummate professional. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Sylvia Brown.

[Applause. Brown. microphone in hand, is shown standing in the aisle among audience members.]

[Title: "SYLVIA BROWN - Psychic"]

Brown: What I'm going to do tonight is I'm going to go through this audience, and I'm going to do readings. And the only thing that I want you to do is to validate or invalidate anything that I say. Because a lot of times things can be in the future.

This is a classic "out" used by cold-readers (cold reading is a method used to create an illusion of psychic powers). By saying this, Brown(e) insures that, no matter how wrong she is in a reading, she can simply say "Well, this is something which has yet to happen."

[Brown chooses a woman at the far end of the front row.]

Brown: This lady over here. You've never met me before, have you? [the woman shakes her head "no."] There is a young male in your life that has very, very puppy dog eyes.

[At this point, the camera mistakenly shows a long close-up of the wrong woman.]

Brown: You know what I mean? The eyes droop down at the corners... He is going to come back into your life and then leave your life and come back into your life. This looks like a direct connection to you. He's kinda slender, he's athletic-looking, he has sort of large bones. Ummm, and this is going to cause you a great deal of problems. Do you understand what this is about? Do you understand what I'm saying?

Woman #1: Uh-huh. Yes I do.

Brown: And what part?

Woman #1: Umm... The... person coming back and forth and cause problems.

Brown: Who is that to you?

Woman #1: [pause, shakes her head] I think it's somebody I know, I've met recently.

Brown: That keeps coming back and forth. [the woman nods her head "yes."]

The woman did not seem particularly enthusiastic about the reading, and seemed to speak fluent English without a trace of a foreign accent.

Brown: All right, there's somebody here too, this lady right next to you. [turns to audience behind her] I'll get over to you in just a minute. [turns back to second woman] Uhhh, the name Bill keeps coming through so strong from you. Do you know anyone at this point by the name of Bill?

Woman #2: No, I don't.

Brown: There's a heavy-set, full-faced man with jowls, very, very blue eyes that really has something to do with real estate or property that's going to help you. This is aside from the Bill, because this William is also another person.

[The woman shakes her head "no."]

Brown: And this has to do with a two-layered property. In other words, an upstairs and a downstairs.

Woman #2: No, I...

Brown: Not at this point.

Woman #2: [shakes her head "no"] Not at this point.

Brown: Okay. 'Cause this person is going to be very significant to you by the name of William. All right? [the woman nods her head "yes.] Because a lot of times these things can be in the future.

Note that Browne, totally failing in her reading, did indeed use the "in the future" out which she had prepared for herself.

And again, this woman also seemed to speak fluent English without a trace of a foreign accent.

Reading: Man #1

Brown: [turns to a man behind her] Let's go, let's go to you. There is a two-year, two and a half-year period in which it looks like you are going to be - I don't want to say without a job, but there's a flat period in which you're not doing what you want to do. [the man is smiling] And that's going to cause you a lot of dissension. And it's a two-and-a-half-year period, then you're going to get into a lot of marketing and sales work. And this marketing and sales work has to do with three other men that you're going to be training.

Man #1: I understand you not so good, I am a German.

Brown: I don't care whether you're German, you still work or not work, don't you? [the man laughs] I mean, we do that in France, or in Germany, or wherever, don't we?

Man #1: I'm [unintelligible] speak English, and I understand your words.

Brown: Okay. Two years of no working that you like.

Man #1: Yes.

Brown: Okay. [To rest of audience] That's my German. [laughter] Okay. [back to man] Then you're going to be traveling and doing some telemarketing work. Marketing and sales.

Man #1: Yes.

Brown: Yes. Is that yes for me, or yes for you?

Man #1: Yes for me. [laughs]

Here then is the German gentleman Randi mentioned in his commentary. He seemed to speak reasonable English, but could not validate anything Browne said, since it was all future-related.

Brown: Okay, let's see, who else? [Walks up aisle. To young woman] Don't be afraid. Don't be afraid. [the woman laughs] She's sitting here saying "Please don't let her call on me." All right. Who is Kathy?

Woman #3: I don't know.

Brown: This girl by the name of Kathy has dark, curly hair, and she is a friend that looks like she's going to be in school with you. She has very, very beautiful blue eyes, and she does a lot of paperwork with you - which looks like school, 'cause everybody young is in school usually. This person is... by the name of Kathy. Also looks like you are going to get into some sort of therapy work.

Woman #3: [shakes her head "no."] I don't know, that doesn't sound familiar.

Brown: Do you know what you're going to do?

Woman #3: Yes.

Brown: Okay, but it doesn't have anything to do with therapy. [the woman shakes her head "no."] But it looks like you're going to be dealing with people that have to do with therapy. In other words, advising people, helping people, talking to people. Okay? [the woman raises her eyebrows in a doubtful expression.] All right.

Once again, fluent English, no hint of a foreign accent.

Note how Brown starts off in the present tense ("Who is Kathy"), and when that fails to get a response, once again takes the "in the future" out ("she's going to be in school with you").

Also, when her "therapy work" guess gets no response, she immediately broadens it greatly ("you're going to be dealing with people that have to do with therapy. In other words, advising people, helping people, talking to people."). When that still gets no response, she moves on.

Brown: Let's see, who else? [walks to a young man] Umm, it looks like you're going to get into show business.

Man #2: Uh, no.

Brown: No, well you don't know that yet, you're not psychic. [laughter] But it looks like you're going to do something in show business that's going to be really wonderful for you.

Again, no hint of an accent, speaks English just fine.

And when Browne's "show business" guess bombs, she turns it into a joke.

Closing
Brown wrapping up the segment

Brown wrapping up the segment

Brown: This is a demonstration of what psychic ability can be like, and of course, no one is god, but there is also a power beyond yourself that you feel that really can be very valid. And I feel that I must support the fact that there are such things that can be valid. Thank you very much.

[audience applauds]

Bill Bixby: Ladies and gentlemen, Sylvia Brown!

Brown's whole closing statement makes little sense, and does not sound like something spoken by an English major, let alone someone with a Master's Degree in English Literature.

Analysis

Browne's performance here as a "psychic" was pretty bad, to put it mildly.

The only thing even close to a "hit" was when Woman #1 thought that someone she had recently met could possibly be the person Brown was describing.

If the audience had been instructed - as Jaroff states - to only respond with "yes" or "no," this would definitely spoil a cold-reading act. Cold-readers depend on the person being read to provide them with the information which they then feed back as though they received it "psychically." Without that unwitting cooperation on the part of the person being read, a cold-reader will generally fall flat, as Browne did on this occasion.

But this article is about analyzing her and Randi's accounts of the show.

So, let's analyze the statements Browne made on the Larry King Live show regarding why she did so poorly:

Browne Statement Reality Right/Wrong
"...they [the audience] were all German." Only one she spoke with was German Wrong
"...they couldn't understand one word I said." With the one exception, everyone she read seemed to understand her fine. Wrong
"...that was a setup, as you well know." Apparently not. Wrong
"...they couldn't speak English." All of them spoke English. Wrong

Randi's version seems very much on the money. The only one of his statements which is not totally supported by the video was that only one out of the 140 audience members was German. Just from viewing the video, there is no way of knowing about those members of the audience with whom Browne did not speak.

Conclusion

So, it is inescapable that Browne was 100% wrong when she described her participation in this show.

But is she, as James Randi says, a liar?

Browne seems to have a history of assuming that she can say whatever she wants about something, and that nobody will look it up to see if she is telling the truth or not. And unfortunately, many of her followers tend to take her statements at face value. And without the actual footage, it would have been impossible to determine who was telling the truth, Browne or Randi.

Luckily, the video is now available, and it is quite obvious to me at least, that Sylvia Browne is indeed a liar.

Update: May 29 2007

James Randi, upon reading this article, sent me the following note:

Robert: re the Bixby/Browne video, it should be said that I mixed with that section of our audience following the incident, and as far as I could tell, all of them spoke English quite well – as did the German tourist, who was just confused by what Browne was saying/asking him, a not unlikely situation. The tourist even asked Bixby and me for our autographs...

James Randi.
