Email: Young Woman "Asks Montel”

A young woman asks Montel Williams why he has Browne on his show.

"First of all, I don't believe in psychics. I have never believed in psychics... I believe in Sylvia Browne."

- Montel Williams, as quoted by email author

Background

When watching Sylvia Browne on the Montel Williams show, I frequently wonder if Williams actually believes her to be a "true psychic," or if he doesn't care one way or the other, and simply has her on for the sake of ratings.

A woman who seems to wonder the same thing was recently able to ask Williams a question which elicited a rather confusing reply.

The Email

On November 30, 2006, I received the following email, shown here with the author’s permission (I have removed her name and email address.):

Subject: Hello, Mr.Lancaster!

From: "[Name]" <[Email address]>

Date: Fri, Dec 01, 2006 1:21 pm

To: webmaster@StopSylviaBrowne.com

My name is [Name] and I'm an 18-year-old college student from NYC.

About a month ago, I had guests from out of town and was looking for show tickets for them and obtained two for The Montel Williams Show. Before the taping, there's a "Ask Montel" segment and I mustered the courage to ask Montel Williams why he invites Sylvia Browne to his show.

Montel Williams answered "First of all, I don't believe in psychics.I have never believed in psychics" "Great!" I declared."I believe in Sylvia Browne" he continued and gave a very long explanation about how she isn't pychic but has an enormous amount of intuition and sees all she sees through intuition, not paramormal abilities (I'm with him on the last part) . He related how when Albert Einstein died and his brain was cut open, he was discovered to have had a more developed parietal lobe than the average human and that when Sylvia Browne dies and her brain is studied, she'll be found to have a very advanced brain lobe for intuition, far more than what the average human has. He let me stand at the microphone for about another two minutes as he praised Sylvia Bowne to the skies and repeated that the things that he has seen her do in this room, he has never seen anyone else do and it's extraordinary what she's done and he's seen her do miracles with his own eyes yada, yada, yada. Yeah, like tell a woman her boyfriend drowned when he died in a terrorist attack on national TV and still keep her job. That is extraordinary indeed.

In conclusion, Montel told me "and you'll notice that in the 16 years I've been on air, I have never had anyone else in her profession ever appear on the show, not once. She's the only mentalist, psychic, anyone like that who's ever been let on, even though many have come to me and wanted to be on the show." Excellent, Montel, you only believe in one more non-psychic than I do, I thought.

What do you make of his "scientific" explanation of Sylvia Browne's "gifts" ? Is the science in on "intuition"? I've always believed there was no way to know something without using any of the senses and any "intuition" is just deduction based on knowledge and common sense.

Anyhow, after the show was over, "VIP passes" for Sylvia Browne for a later show were being given to the guests who had stayed for two shows and I noticed that from my audience, aout ten people had sat through two shows (people who have never had sex and whatever the topic was of the previous taping) just to see her. She probably is the biggest draw that The Montel Williams Show has. Well, I'd imagine she'd be bigger than People Who Were Driven Over By Their Lawn Mowers.

Analysis

So - according to this woman - Williams thinks that Browne is not psychic, just extraordinarily intuitive?

I have to wonder whether or not Browne knows that this is what he thinks. Either way, it doesn't make sense.

How could intuition, regardless of how highly-developed, help a person to know some of the things Browne claims to know, such as:

- The names of a person's "guardian angels."

- The names and occupations of ghosts inhabiting a person's home.

- How many children (and of what genders) a person will have in the coming years.

- The name of a person's yet-to-be-met "soul mate."

If this is how Williams defines "intuitive," what does he think a person would have to know in order to be "psychic?"

It also seems to contradict things Williams has said in the past, such as this quote from the cover of Browne's book Adventures of a Psychic:

"PSYCHIC, MEDIUM, CLAIRVOYANT, CHANNEL... I never believed in these four words before, and then I met Sylvia Browne"

- Montel Williams

So, why then did he tell this woman he did not believe in psychics? Impossible to say.

Perhaps he assumed the woman did not believe in psychic powers (it is not clear from her question, or even her entire email, whether that is the case, or whether she just doesn't think that Browne is psychic), and so tried to come up with an answer which would not offend the Browne supporters in the audience, but would still satisfy a skeptic in their midst. If so, it apparently did not work.

Conclusion

I have to admire the nerve it took for this woman to stand in front of a room full of Williams' fans - which must have included quite a few Browne fans - and ask this question. I mentioned this to her in my reply to this email, and she said that, while Williams was very polite and gracious in his answer, she did indeed get a number of dirty looks from fellow audience members.

But no matter what Williams says, whether on his show, in a book, or in front of a studio audience, we may never know his true opinion on Browne.
